DEADLINE EXTENDED- Nominations Sought for Presidential Community Service, Service Learning Awards

03/09/2015

UPDATE-- The Inaugural Service Learning Award and Community Service Award deadline has been extended until March 18, 2015 due to delays caused by recent ice and snow.

The Service Committee is proud to announce two new Presidential Service Awards for all JSU affiliated groups and organizations (groups/ organizations include but are not limited to student organizations, clubs and other campus related organizations).

The first award is the Presidential Community Service Award. This award is designed to honor an outstanding campus group or organization in their achievements in the area of community service. Community service is defined as action taken by students or student organizations to provide benefit to local, state, or national communities through commitment and dedication of time and effort for the public good, whether that effort is related to curriculum or is extra-curricular. Further, community service provides students with an opportunity to engage others in a beneficial way. Community service is a form of civic engagement teaching students the importance of service within the local community in work associated with specific organizations or outreach programs. A sub-committee of the University Service Committee will evaluate submissions and determine the winner.

The second award is the Presidential Service Learning Award. This award is designed to honor an outstanding campus group or organization in their achievements in the area of service learning. Service learning is defined as an instructional model that allows students to engage with the community; reflect on their experiences, making connections between those experiences and course materials as well as the academic discipline; and enter into public dialogue through writing, research, or other course activity.

The Second Annual Service Showcase will be held on Tuesday, March 31, from 2 - 4 p.m. on the 11th floor of the Houston Cole Library.  JSU affiliated groups and organizations are eligible to present community service and/or service learning projects that were completed between March 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015. Participants in the Showcase will be considered for the two Presidential Awards.  Nominations must be received by March 11, 2015.
